My favourite part on this album is definitley the middle section of the title track, but the rest of the song isn't quiet so good. Most of the songs on this album I don't like, they are too dull and don't have much melody. The production doesn't bother me too much either, to me the original sound just as bad. The playing doesn't sound particularly bad to me, just different given thay they are different musicians and they don't have a rhythm guitar and they add keyboards, which are kind of nice to have, but aren't very notable. The main reason why I would think this album would be worst than the original is the vocals, which certainly don't fit the music, at least not the way they are sung. I give it a low rating because I just don't like this album. I don't give this album a low rating because I think DT does a poor job covering this album. I can't even say two stars due to the fact that I consider myself quite a fan of this talented band, and even I find myself apalled by this. This performance makes me rethink that though. While some people seem to have an all-encompassing issue with the man's vocal tone I personally love James LaBries style, and regard him as one of the greatest vocalists to ever be recorded. The main awful thing is however (I hate to say) but James LaBrie's voice. It sounds like someone had their cellphone microphone on and was recording the band in the front row. First off, the sound quality for this live performance is far below par especially for a band known for releasing good live albums. Wouldn't it be safe to think that this would be a very cool thing to listen to? Keeping this in mind, Dream Theater are one of my all-time favourite bands. While I'm not a big fan of Metallica, I can safely say that other people's opinions aside I consider 'Master of Puppets' to be a genuine masterpiece of metal.
This is in fact the worst thing the band has ever released in their catalog especially due to the fact that it had the potential to be so much more. "Tempus Fugit" especially is a great song.'Master Of Puppets' - Dream Theater (N/A)
LaBrie has lost a lot of his range from back in the day (as have a lot of metal vocalists) but he still has really good pitch control and tone in his middle register I think.Īgree on "Drama" being underrated. I feel sorry for LaBrie for having to memorize them. There is just so much filler in there, Portnoy's vocals are annoying, and their lyrics are terrible I think. Their new music actually actively turns me off now, I'm not even indifferent to it. Without Kevin Moore in the band, I think their music has gotten lame and tasteless. I even like their debut album a lot even though a lot of people criticize the vocals for reasons I don't understand. I started getting disappointed in them with "Awake" even though it had some great moments on it and after that I think they lost the plot. "Pull Me Under" is definitely one of their coolest songs I think, so I can see why you only liked that one. They noodle too, just in a different way. Though I have to admit, I briefly considered getting on the line to meet DT just so I could tell them, "You guys are pretentious as hell." Haha. I was unaware of it till the store security guard (a guy I knew from high school, and who knew of my musical tastes), who was by the door keeping people in line, stopped me and asked "I guess you're here to see Dream Theater?" I was like "Um.no," so he let me through so I could shop elsewhere in the store. Years ago I walked into my local Tower Records and Dream Theater happened to be doing an in-store. Phenomenal musicians, though, I will admit. I've liked an odd track here and there since then but overall I guess they're not really my thang.
I bought IMAGES & WORDS back when it came out cuz I dug the song "Pull Me Under" (which as I soon found out, was not exactly a "typical" DT song), but the rest of the album bored me to tears. I dunno, I guess I never quite "got" this band. It's not just their recent stuff with me. I agree when it comes to their recent material.
